~American Dream~
Mr. Gatz described his son as the ultimate son that a father could ask for. Smart, generous, and ambitious- which is a big part of the “American Dream“. But sadly Mr. Gatz didn’t have the opportunity to get to know his son very well.
~Character Development~
When Gatsby needed Daisy the most she decided to up & leave. She didn’t say goodbye neither did she even tell anyone where she was going she just up-n-left. This makes her seem like a guilty coward almost because she was running away. Running away from her family her feelings her memories everything she was trying to leave Gatsby behind her but she will realize it won’t work he’ll always be a part of her because she was in love with him once upon a time & will be forever.

“Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning—”
* This green light resembles new life & a chance to change. All Gatsby ever wanted was to rewind time & go back to the life he knew with Daisy. That light is a constant symbol that shows that time will continue no matter what happens in life, even after Gatsby is dead that light will still be burning everything will keep moving & even after Daisy & Tom & Nick & Jordan die everything will still be in motion the world doesn’t stop turning just because you will it to do so & so life will go on whether or not anybody gets their Dream & if they do get it by the time they realize that it wasn’t what they wanted it will be too late because in the end nobody gets what they really want.
It seems to me that wealth becomes very apparent in chapter 6. When Daisy’s daughter comes out so that Daisy can simply “show her off” then she sends her back to wherever she came from with her full time nanny & we don’t’ see her but once more throughout the entire book. This shows that Tom and Daisy are so rich they pay for someone to take care of their kid (ALL THE TIME!). Daisy isn’t even a real mom she doesn’t take care or her child in the least she just summons for her to be brought out to show her off to people. When they go to the hotel to drink & cool off it shows that money isn’t a big deal either & that they can just waste it on whatever they want whenever they want.
~Character Development~
We can see Daisy develop into someone who was for so long secretly & soul consumingly in love with Gatsby, to someone who can’t tell her husband anything remotely close to what she has been telling Gatsby. She is living in a fantasy world & knows that she won’t leave Tom even though she has been stringing Gatsby along like a puppy tied to a love leash. She doesn’t care as long as she’s happy.
~Colors~
White is once again in this chapter but they mention white powder & in my opinion I see the white powder as a mask. You know, she may look all sweet & innocent on the outside but in reality she has been leading Gatsby on & cheating on her husband as well.
The “American dream” is to be rich(as I’ve said before) & go to all the fancy smanchy dinner parties you want & to drink & be gay with all the other people of your high & mighty status. But as we all know Gatsby’s situation is different, he may be rich but he doesn’t fit in with the “rich crowd”.
~Character Development~
In previous chapters I’m sure that you were able to comprehend that Gatsby didn’t really fit in but when he accepts the woman’s invitation when she wasn’t really inviting him it clearly shows how much of a total outcast(aka loser) he really is. He simply doesn’t get the way they communicate or even function.
~Colors~
There is quite a bit of white here. For example, “Daisy’s white face” I think that the white represents the beauty, purity & perfection of Daisy.
~American Dream~
The 5th chapter shows the importance of $. I don’t know if you noticed but I did that Gatsby marches Daisy around his house(almost elegantly) & shows her his hundreds of expensive beautiful shirts( of all things he could have shown her he showed her his shirts! Come On!). But Daisy couldn’t marry him because he had nothing before he went away to war. But Gatsby wants to prove that now after all these years & even though she is married with a kid he is worthy of her love. He believes that he has achieved quite a bit since the last time she saw him & he makes sure that Daisy notices.
~Character Development~
I think that in this chapter we really see how much Gatsby loves Daisy. “You’re acting like a little boy” See what I mean? Gatsby is so nervous he can’t even go about his every day life & act somewhat normal.(whatever that is.)
~Colors~
“You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.” I think that green light is a sign of action & maybe even the act of pursuing.
~ “American Dream“ ~
Crazy rumors were circulating about her – how her mother had found her packing her bag one winter night to go to New York & say goodbye to the soldier who was going overseas. She was effectually prevented, but she wasn’t on speaking terms with her family for several weeks. ” This shows that the parents “American Dream” isn’t for their daughter to go off & marry some poor soldier but to marry a rich man who can get out of going to war probably so they can have some kids to carry on the family name.
~ Character development ~
In this chapter we see that Gatsby is a nice guy who cares a lot about other people. He doesn’t want to upset anyone & is a very loving guy but it also seemed like he was hiding something very big that he didn‘t want anybody else to know.
~ colors ~
She dressed in white & had a little white roadster” I think they are showing how pure Daisy was & how much she stood out from the rest of the girls.
In this chapter Gatsby is throwing one of his gigantic parties, & while they are looking around his house it describes all the amazing stuff he has. It shows that the “American dream” is to be rich & to have all the super nice expensive things you can show off to all your supposed friends.
~Character development~
Jordan Baker’s character develops into an independent party girl in this chapter. She goes to Gatsby’s parties all the time, but she seems to know how to handle herself. For example, “Jordan Baker instinctively avoided clever shrewd men and now I saw that this was because she felt safer on a plane where & divergence from a code would be thought impossible.” It also said she was a very dishonest woman or in my language she flat out lied all the time.
~Colors~
There are so many different colors at the party & I think they are used to show all the different moods & personalities in the party throughout the night.
CH.2
~American Dream~
“You can’t live forever; you can’t live forever.’’ This shows must live life to the fullest, always do what you want when you want to do it. There is also so much more about how the “American Dream” is becoming rich. Mrs. McKee says, “I almost made a mistake, too,” she declared vigorously. “I almost married a little kyke who’d been after me for years. I knew he was below me. Everybody kept saying to me: ‘Lucille, that man’s ‘way below you!’ But if I hadn’t met Chester, he’d of got me sure.” Can‘t you see how GREEDY everyone is? They would do anything to get their hands on some money, even give up the most precious thing in the entire universe… LOVE!
~Character Development~
“Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand.” In the 1st chapter Tom was described as being a fierce, tough, cold, man. This quote just shows how mean & aweful he really is. He doesn’t even care about who he hurts in the process, he will do anything to get what he wants.
~Colors~
There is a lot of darkness(regarding colors) in this chapter like, ash gray & plain gray are mentioned quite a bit in the 1st paragraph. I think it’s a way to set the tone & personality for the chapter. Sort of dark & sneaky & mean.
The quote: “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” This shows that part of the “American dream” is having money & an education . If you have those 2 things then you’ll be set for life, if not you are gonna lead a life of constant feeling of failure & criticism.
~Character development~
For this chapter Nick is starting to make his own way, his own living & by his reactions it sounds to me like he is very surprised to hear that Tom is unfaithful, & he is starting to realize that the world he lives in is in fact is very far from perfect.
~Color symbolism~
White and red appear a lot. I think that when the color white is used it’s referring to a pure, kind & almost innocent human being, when he uses red he is often referring to characteristics of Tom’s house or personality. So I think it’s used as the harsh, vulgar, sort of deceitful side of a person.
The NO’S
- Its utterly & completley Unethical!!!
- No Clone would ever be able to lead a normal life!!!
- If God wanted there to be two of us he would have given us a twin!!!
- There could be problems within the cloning process thingy!!! What if it caused brain damage or bodily harm??
- What If your clone turned totally evil and wanted like world domination or something and then went into hiding & the government thought it was you ( the original you) who planned & did all that stuff & you got in trouble for it???!!! Wouldn’t that suck?!
- The size of this experiment is too large for us to handle right now!
THE BUT’S
- You would always have a blood donor or some type of inner organ giver upper!!!
- We would be so technologically advanced everybody would think we were super smart & stuff like that!! Not to mention everything that could change due to the cloning.
- Your clone could give you any organ you would need so you could live forever & ever… you would live to be like a thousand years old or even more!!!
- Life for everyone would be a whole lot easier…
Quesitions for Discussion
1. Okay so first off Jay Gould questions how scientists think by constantly showing how their theories & assumptions are all wrong even though they are scientists. And when he states the fact on how if you have a smaller brain it automatically makes you dumb, is absoultely terribly reasearched, its totally unbelieveable.
Questions on Rhetoric and Style
3. As his “connecting paragraph” Gould refers to paragraphs 12-13. He is finding something to agree on with the audience by talking about the failures & the flaws instead of what he found. which could potentially bore the audience. so he brings them in by using this tactic.
6. this is showing how back then they overlooked flaws. From my perspective all these ideas tend to contradict eachother.
7. Some of the older peoples brains are still held high on a pedastool and have a small amount of claim in todays science world. ( even though the lights may flicker on & off from time to time.)
9. Jay Gould actually explains to us what he thinks & how he feels in a very to the point way.
10. Gould “caresses” pathos by bringing up some old research that made claims against how today’s society equals (women). He uses words like 2 headed gorilla, and larger brains, these adjective containig words tend to start fires under peoples butts.
